La Civil
Teodora Ana Mihai, B/MEX/RO 2021, 145 min, Span.OF. mit engl.UT
We are pleased to present the winning film of our 2021 film award
»Der politische Film« (»The Political Film«), »La Civil« (directed by Teodora Ana Mihai).
The film excels in its portrayal of civil courage and female self-empowerment
in the face of criminal violence and state despotism. The film celebrated its
German premiere at last years »Filmfest Hamburg«.
About the film: Cielo's daughter Laura is kidnapped by a criminal cartel in
northern Mexico and, despite paying ransoms, is not returned to her mother.
Cielo receives little support from the local authorities and therefore decides
to take the search for her daughter into her own hands. In the course of
her investigations, an unconventional collaboration forms with Lieutenant Lamarque,
which draws her further into a spiral of criminal power structures.
In a society without a state monopoly on violence, Cielo enters a quagmire of injustice,
corruption and violence. »La Civil« depicts her transformation from a housewife
to an activist in search of retribution.
